Need white map- spawn units not in order, zoom out, with moderate screen resolution. Take Screenshot overlay unitshapes - But leave shadows in (shadows are a identifyhelper too) Put up to panel test.

I think of the problem stems from the fact that player colour on units was prioritised to enable players to be more easily identified. However, this was done so much that now, granted, widgets like team platters and unitshapes are no longer required which is great, but instead the difference between a lot of units can not quickly be identified.
Maybe make a list of units that are hard to distinguish between and change some player colour parts of those models to be fixed unit colours?

Yes; I like the idea of limiting the texture selection for units to a relatively small number, as it helps in maintaining a common theme and makes the art style more consistent. One of problems of OTA models, to me, is that they are a pretty awful mismatch of different styles and approaches. However, the limited selection of textures on a per-unit basis and the high amount of team color does mean that the primary way for immediate separation of units is their size and shape instead of their texturing. This in no way means dislike towards the art style and modelling; I personally like it in fact, and my hat goes off to the artists! :) Still, fast unit separation is crucial for a high-tempo RTS.
The worst offenders to my eye and what goes to T1 Core, are: Weasel vs. Spoiler Wolverine vs. Lever vs. Raider Garpike vs. Instigator

Apologies for the poor formatting of the unit list! I didn't realize that trac comment section dislikes single line breaks. The Core T1 similar vehicle units:
Weasel vs. Spoiler,
Wolverine vs. Lever vs. Raider,
Garpike vs. Instigator
Sorry for the screw-up!
